A man from New South Wales has been jailed for two years for selling illegal erectile dysfunction medicines.
Sally Maitra, 25, from Nydra, pleaded guilty at the High Court of Australia to two counts of selling illegal erectile dysfunction products.
Maitra was also ordered to pay a $1.2 million fine and the penalty range was three years and one day jail time.
She had supplied the fake erectile dysfunction tablets to other Australians, including the Australian Customs and Border Force (ACF), who were also arrested in Australia.
They had received the orders from the Department of Health and Prevention, the Department of Justice and the Department of Customs and Border Protection.
She was found guilty at her first court hearing on February 17. The three-month sentence was imposed in the Court of Queen’s Bench, Melbourne.
Maitra’s defence team also said the court case had been carefully considered and had found that the drugs had been sold illegally.
The drugs, which are marketed as treating premature ejaculation, contained sildenafil, the active ingredient in Viagra, which was illegally sold in Australia.
Sildenafil is a phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitor, a chemical class of drugs that is used to treat erectile dysfunction (ED) in men.
It works by blocking the action of phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5).
Maitra’s defence team argued that the tablets were potentially dangerous for women, especially since they could cause serious health problems, including heart attacks and strokes.
They said the drugs were being sold illegally and not the product sold in the real thing.
“The drugs in question are potentially dangerous for women,” the team said.
“There is a very real risk that women who are pregnant or may become pregnant, or who are breastfeeding should not have their periods as there is a potentially serious health hazard associated with the use of PDE5 inhibitors in the mother and father.”
The drugs were sold illegally in the Australian market by men who are aged between 18 and 65.

Maitra was also ordered to pay $250,000 for the drugs and $10,000 for the police and ambulance staff.

A search of the packaging of the fake tablets uncovered sildenafil, the active ingredient in Viagra, in the packaging.
Maitra had no record of taking any medications before the drugs were sold.
The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) said it was “extremely concerned” about the illegal sale of the drugs.
It said it had found evidence that Maitra’s drugs had been illegally marketed and promoted as sexual health products for men.
“The counterfeit products which were sold to the public, including the products sold in the real thing, are a serious criminal offence,” the commission said in a statement.
“We have conducted extensive scientific research and are working with regulatory agencies in Australia to provide appropriate regulatory oversight and control over the distribution and supply of the illicit products.”
The drugs had been illegally marketed as treating premature ejaculation, a condition which can result in erectile dysfunction.
A spokesman for the Department of Health and Prevention said: “We are aware of the serious dangers associated with this practice.
“We are working with the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission to provide appropriate regulatory oversight and control over the distribution and supply of the illicit products.”
The case was prosecuted by a team of undercover police officers.
